The Head of Department of Food Science and Technology at KNUST Kumasi, Ghana, Dr Mrs Faustina Dufie Wireko-Manu visited ISA Lille under the Staff Mobility for Teaching/Training in the frame of the Erasmus Plus Development Cooperation between ISA Lille and KNUST.

“The visit to ISA Lille was under the Staff Mobility for Teaching/Training in the frame of the Erasmus Plus Development Cooperation between ISA Lille and KNUST. The main objective was to learn and share best pedagogical/training methodologies through joint laboratory supervision, industrial visit and meetings with faculty of ISA Lille to discuss prospects of the Development Cooperation. I had the opportunity to co-supervise students’ laboratory projects with Ms Martin-Derveaux, Food Science department faculty member, during the Practical Work Module Week. It was interesting to note the difference in conducting product development practicals, where students have a whole week to plan and mimic an existing commercial product. This mode of practical training is something I hope to modify and implement in the facilitation of Product Development course in my Department. The availability of pilot processing facilities for teaching and product production is something worth emulating at my University.

An industrial visit to the Lesaffre Baking Center with the third year Food Science Class was great. Staff of the company took the class through lectures and series of practicals on the science of baking. It was worth noting that ISA Lille Food Science unit trains students for the industry and thus do more collaborative research to address specific needs of industry and the community. Even though my Department does similar collaborative activities, I learnt ways to strengthen our collaborative activities with the industry.

Thanks be to all the staff I interacted with at ISA, we had good lunch and dinner times amidst discussions on way forward with the collaborations and sharing best practices in training students. I was impressed with the French traditional cuisines and how lunch is enjoyed by all on time. In all, it was a great leaning and sharing experience and I love the way things are organized at ISA, how staff plan for their academic, personal and family activities.

I am very grateful to ISA Lille and KNUST for the sponsorship and appreciate the warm reception by staff of ISA Lille throughout my stay. It is my wish that more of such exchanges will help to share, learn and implement best practices at our various Institutions.”
