What would a Food Technology Pilot Plant in the Hauts-de-France be without a microbrewery?

Lille is the capital of France’s Beer Country, so it’s only natural that our staff and students are interested in creating their own brews. Here are some of the projects we’ve been working on just this year: 

Adopt a Hop! 

In order to supply our pilot plant with high quality, locally-sourced and sustainable hops, our 

Brewmaster Mathieu Lachever, launched the Adopt-a-Hop project. With a lack of sufficient garden space at the school, 40 staff members volunteered to take a hop plant home with them! After months of tender love and care, the first harvest was in September 2017 and allowed us to create a special brew: the ISA Staff Ale. Not only did we get to taste a delicious new craft brew, but it was a group initiative that encouraged cooperation and team-building, and was a valuable lesson in the brewing process for those of us working in other specialties. 

Award-Winning Beer 

Every year, the brewery at Lille University 1 hosts a student brewing competition called L’Arène des Bières. This event brings together the different student breweries of Lille and we are proud to say that this year, the Triple developed and brewed by ISA Lille students won the grand prize! Beer-brewing is part of the student curriculum, but also the raison d’être of the student club, Bièr’ISA. Learn more about our student associations. 

Special brew for La Capsule 

Celebrating their 10th anniversary, local craft brew pub La Capsule, worked with us to create a new craft beer “10 Years Coffee Choc”. The base was a blonde beer with wheat, rye, and oats, with Mistral and Aramis hops for bitterness and Aramis and Strisselspalt hops for aroma. Adding to that coffee roasted here in Lille from local coffee shop Coffee Makers, hints of sweetness and a touch of citric acidity. The final touch was steeped cocoa beans for a rich, silky birthday beer!  

Bière à Lille Brewing Festival

In honor of the B A L – Bière à Lille Brewing Festival, three beers were brewed in our brewery and put on tap at Au Fût et à mesure! La Vauban, named after our neighborhood, a Belgian Ale in the tradition of our region of Flanders, and the Stout Vanille, for a special flavor. We also opened our brewery space to a local microbrewer who created a special beer, the Internation’Ale, for the festival.

Our microbrewery is open to visitors as well! Your company/group can organize a team building day through hands-on learning all about the brewing process and even enjoy the fruits of your labor by brewing your own craft beer! Learn more about this service [In French].
