Conference: Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility in Agrifood

On Thursday, January 17, 2019 the 5th year students in our Food Science program had the opportunity to present a conference on the theme “New opportunities, valorisation of co-products, CSR strategy, waste management” in the presence of Dr. Charis Galanakis and Mr. Martinez Garcia.

Dr. Galanakis is Director of Research and Innovation at Galanakis Laboratories (Chania, Greece), and has published dozens of research articles and four books including Food Waste Recovery, published in 2015. This is an opportunity for students to talk about this book and discuss the new market and employment opportunities associated with the development of agri-food industry co-products, through its presentation entitled: “Marketing efforts for the recovery of food waste and bio-industries.”

Mr. Martinez Garcia, who graduated from our Food Science program in 2015, works as a CSR Project Manager in the Laudun Chusclan Vignerons wine cooperative near Avignon. His presentation “Social responsibility and waste management in the wine industry” allowed students to discuss topics such as “Sustainable development and social responsibility”, “Standards and guidelines for developing a social and sustainable strategy”, and “The wine sector in France and social responsibility”.

The conference ended with a debate during which speakers and students could discuss these issues. Thanks again to the speakers for the quality of their presentations and all the knowledge shared!

The next Food Tech Afternoon conference will take place on February 7, 2019.
