My research themes are founded around interactions between the Metallic Trace Elements (ETM) and plants. The goal is to combine two complementary approaches, in controlled and in situ conditions. On one hand, the research carried out in controlled conditions will allow the evaluating of the effects of metallic contaminations on plants and the understanding of the toxicity mechanisms. This approach will be made at several levels:

• Evaluation of macroscopic effects: growth, hydric status, emergence of necrosis, chlorosis,…
• Histological observation of the cellular organization
• Study of the impact on the photosynthetic process : level of pigments, efficiency of photosynthesis
• Characterization of the defence and sequestration mechanisms of the ETM by plants: in particular, via the study of phytochelatins
• Disturbance of the oxidative metabolism (histochemical localization and quantification of the Reactive species of the Oxygen, activities of antioxydizing enzymes, redox status) and of its consequences  (lipidic peroxydation, oxidative alterations of proteins, nucleic acids)
• Study of the genotoxic effects of the contaminants (Clastogenic effects via the Micronoyaux test and mutagens via the Comètes test).

On the other hand, the finality of the approach in controlled environment is to produce and select relevant tools (biomarkers) allowing the in situ evaluating of the environmental risks for plants. The in situ approach then allows the validating of the selected biomarkers. The final goal is to conduct a biomonitoring of the study fragments by allowing, on one side, the characterizing of the impact of multi-metallic contaminations on plants and, on the other, the evaluating of the efficiency of the phytoremediation processes implemented by the laboratory.

From a pedagogic point of view, my main mission is the organization of the Intensive Erasmus Program (EIP)  “Pollution in Europe”, of which I am in charge. This EIP is for about forty European students of Master’s degree level coming from 15 different European universities or institutes. On top of the scientific and logistic organization during the 2 weeks of the EIP, I do several sequences of Ecotoxicology teachings.

Trained as an engineer in agricultural techniques, I have since acquired theoretical and practical knowledge in functional ecology. Using, as a model, the soil’s microflora (protozoans and nematodes), I study the relationships that the latter has with the micro-flora, the mesofauna and the macrofauna, the tree cover, the organic matter, the biogeochemical cycles. These reflections aim to better understand the impacts of human activity (agricultural and industrial) on the ecosystems’ functioning, including the soil compartment, and this, in order to allow the proposing/including of more sustainable management solutions of anthropized systems. I am also part of ISA’s Soils and Environment team, which is attached to the LGCgE laboratory (Civil Engineering and GeoEnvironment, Lille North of France).
